Thousands of years have passed since humanity's expansion into space. To make a living, Kenji Tanaka joined the military, where he discovered his aptitude for piloting humanoid weapons called Combat Armors and a special psychic ability known as Nenpa (thought-waves). He served as a Senior Colonel in the Pan-Galactic Republic Space Force's Special Operations Unit, all while constantly dreaming of a different career. While returning from a mission to quell a planetary rebellion, Kenji is suddenly swallowed by a black hole. He awakens to find himself in a world of swords and magic, his soul transferred into the body of Elol, the young heir to the Glack family. His new family belongs to the lowest order of nobility, the 'Goshi' (a rank similar to a rural, landed samurai). In this new world, Kenji learns of giant humanoid weapons powered by magic called 'Mashō Kijin' (Magic Crystal Automatons) and their elite superior models, the 'Mashō Kishin' (Magic Crystal Deities). He also discovers that the 'Sōsha' (Pilots) who control these machines are almost exclusively nobles, and it is through this power that they rule and sustain the world. "Even so, I'm just a Goshi of the lowest rank. I'll use a Mashō Kijin to develop my territory and live a quiet, comfortably rich life." Believing from his past military life that getting involved with the top brass only leads to trouble, Kenji attempts to settle into a moderately prosperous life as a humble country lord. However, his skills as an ace pilot from a past life, combined with his newfound immense magical power, gradually begin to draw unwanted attention. Can Kenji, now Elol, truly achieve the peaceful life of a rural noble he so desires?
